The Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Bridging Program provides an opportunity for an individual with a journeyperson trades ticket to complete a teacher preparation program offered by the University of Alberta. The program also provides the CTS Bridging Program participant with the opportunity to work while pursuing an Interim Professional Teaching Certificate. The CTS Bridging Program participants will be authorized to work in schools under a Letter of Authority while continuing studies upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Education pre-service courses.

 

A. STEPS - CTS Bridging Program

1. Complete application (please see attached)for the CTS Bridge to Teacher Certification program with the Calgary Catholic School District and indicate your commitment to the program. Check with University of Alberta on admission requirements and courses required.

2. The district selects candidates. Individuals with journeyperson status currently working in the district will be given priority when candidates are selected for this program.

3. Candidate applies to the University of Alberta for entrance into the Bachelor of Education Program.

4. Candidates provide confirmation of acceptance into the University of Alberta.

5. Complete pre-service courses consisting of a minimum of 36 semester-hour credits (currently available only at the University of Alberta).

6. Continue courses and study to complete the required credits needed for a Bachelor of Education degree.

7. Continue coursework at a minimum of 6 semester-hour credits of teacher preparation/year.

8. Candidates selected will work collaboratively with the district CTS Supervisor and teacher mentor to demonstrate consistently that he or she understands the competencies related to an Interim Professional Certificate as included in the Teaching Quality Standard.

B. Journeyperson Status

Applicants must hold a valid Trade Certification in one of the following areas:

• Culinary Arts-Foods

•Construction-Woods

•Automotives-Mechanic

C. Employment Status

Individuals currently employed in the district will be seconded to complete the Pre-Service courses and will continue to be employed by the district in their current position, as they complete their courses throughout the CTS Bridge to Teacher Certification Program. Upon meeting the requirements to receive a Letter of Authority, the participant will be placed in a teaching position in their trade area within the district. Candidates will continue to work in their current position when not attending classes or involved in their teaching practicum.

Individuals not currently employed in the district will receive funding while taking courses in the CTS Bridge to Certification Program with the understanding they will commit to work for the district upon meeting the requirements for the Letter of Authority to begin teaching. Participants are expected to continue to complete courses for their Education Degree.

All applicants for these positions are conditionally accepted but contingent on a successful BRIDGE Program application.
