Consultant, Blind and Visually Impaired
Overall Accountability
The Consultant of Blind and Visually Impaired provides leadership, service, and support at the district level. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team in Learning Services, the Consultant for Blind and Visually Impaired supports school and district personnel to meet Alberta Education requirements for the assessment, identification and programming for students who are blind or visually impaired.
In addition, the Consultant is a team member of Learning Services and has responsibilities to work collaboratively on provincial / district initiatives, district priorities, emergent issues, assessment, differentiated instruction, and liaising with Alberta Education and other external agencies / groups.
Specific Accountabilities
Provide support and assistance to teachers, school-based administrators, and Learning Services to:
- Enhance the permeation of Catholicity throughout the district
- Collaborates with district personnel to support quality programming for students with special needs, in regular education settings, congregated classrooms or congregated schools
- Promote welcoming, caring, respectful and safe school environments and student resiliency
- Support the championing of students by developing the skillsets of school-based staff, and the development of positive student-staff relationships
- Provide seamless service, in collaboration with district Learning Services personnel, to provide appropriate program recommendations to support teachers and educational assistants in fostering student success
- Through the use of technology and other means, provide teachers with information related to research, pedagogy, and best practice in teaching, learning, and assessment in special needs programming
- Coordinate and facilitate networking and on-site and district level professional development opportunities for appropriate district personnel
- Consult with parents / legal guardians and school-based administrators where necessary
- Liaise with institutions, agencies, and organizations that support programming in the area of special needs such as Alberta Health Services, Renfrew Educational Services, Society for the Treatment of Autism, etc.
- Supports teachers incorporating the expanded curriculum for students who are blind or visually impaired
- Provide teachers and teacher assistants with information relevant to the student’s diagnosed condition and related learning issues
- Facilitate requests for Braille, taped and large print materials
- Build capacity at the school and district level by providing both on-site and district level professional development opportunities
- Prepare resources to support teachers and teacher assistants in program implementation
- Support and provide professional development for Braille assistants
- Maintain a current knowledge base through ongoing personal professional development
- Provide input into district report and document preparation
- Participate in Learning Services team meetings
This position does not include teaching or school administration duties.
Qualifications
- Valid Alberta permanent professional teaching certificate
- Valid Alberta driver’s license and reliable vehicle (mileage reimbursed at district rate)
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience preferred
- Evidence of specialized study or post graduate course work in the area of blind and visually impaired is preferred
- Current Pastoral Letter – Leadership Opportunity (forms available on the district intranet site or from Human Resources)
- Knowledge of instructional and management strategies, resources and materials that support best practices in instructional programming for blind or visually impaired students’ success
- Knowledge of Alberta Education’s mandates related to programming for students who are blind or visually impaired, including experience with the criteria, process of coding and related Learning Support Plan (LSP) development and implementation
- Leadership experience that demonstrates the ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to prioritize tasks, show initiative, and complete complex projects
- Knowledge of basic orientation and mobility techniques
- Knowledge of reading and writing of braille preferred
- Familiarity with resources that support programming for students who are blind or visually impaired
- Experience and knowledge in the understanding and integration of technology into supporting success for students who are blind or visually impaired
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

Responsible To
In the performance of the above responsibilities, the Consultant of Blind and Visually Impaired reports to the Supervisor, Diverse Learning, Learning Services.
Length of Term
This is a one- year Learning Services Consultant temporary position.
