Overall Accountability

The Education Assistant, Deaf & Harding of Hearing assists and supports the educational programming for students who are deaf and hard of hearing as directed by the teacher, the Consultant, Instructional Services, Deaf & Hard of Hearing, the Educational Audiologist and supervised by the Principal. This Education Assistant is a member of the student’s learning team.

 

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provides one-on-one instructional support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Clarifies classroom instruction and school related communication and facilitates communication between the student, hearing peers and staff using a combination of sign language and/or spoken language where required.
  • Implements speech-language program recommendations.
  • Participates in providing one-on-one support for Learner Support Plan goals and objectives, while promoting a safe, calm, and positive learning environment
  • Assists with student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering, medical needs, etc.)
  • Documents observations and maintains records in compliance with Alberta Education’s mandates and monitoring expectations.
  • Provides one-on-one support in the use of specialized equipment, e.g., hearing equipment, assistive technology.
  • Assists students during school celebrations, liturgical events, services and attendance at Mass at local parishes.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Diploma/certificate in the training of special education teacher assistants or in a related field of study
  • Certificate in American Sign Language or Signed Exact English
  • Working knowledge of specialized equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google apps
