Overall Accountability
The Physical Therapist works collaboratively to enable kindergarten children and students in grades 1-6 and English Language Learning preschool children to develop the means and opportunities to engage in and improve their gross motor functions in all aspects of school and home life.
The Physical Therapist interacts with teachers, Education Assistants, other members of the school learning team, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists and Department of Learning Services to develop in-class, inclusive programs to address gross motor development of children, to monitor the child’s progress, evaluating outcomes as well as changing and adapting programs as required. The Physical Therapist makes recommendations, in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team of professionals, the teacher as well as parents/legal guardians to ensure the success of the child in the school, home and/or community.
Specific Accountabilities
- Evaluates the child’s/student’s gross motor level of functioning in areas of the child’s classroom work and playtime
- Supports children/students and parents/legal guardians to implement programs to permit carry-over from classroom learning to the home setting and into the community
- Diagnoses physical conditions and develops treatment plans to assist with movement and function for the kindergarten child or student in grades 1-6
- Writes assessment and treatment reports (assist with goals for Learner Support Plans (LSP), year-end summaries, etc.) to be shared with parents/legal guardians, members of the school team and Department of Learning Services as well as external professionals
- Provides ongoing observation of the child’s/student’s progress and adjusts treatment accordingly
- Provides skills and goals for an inclusive classroom setting, home setting and new environments using the LSP
- Leads instruction and activities with large and small groups of children
- Collaborates with other therapists, when possible, to demonstrate cross-connection, i.e. behaviour and language strategies
Qualifications
- Education:
- Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) and experience as noted below; or
- Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy (BScPT) and experience as noted below
- Experience:
- MScPT - one (1) to three (3) years’ experience direct pediatric or early childhood physical therapy intervention; including working with children aged 3½ - 6 years
- BScPT - minimum ten (10) years’ experience direct pediatric or early childhood physical therapy intervention; including working with children aged 3½ - 6 years
- Registered with the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta (CPTA)
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License and a vehicle in good operating condition
- Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal and prioritization skills
- Proven collaboration and team building skills
